Forget not !!

Couple of generations back, where the system of joint family set up was widely prevalent, as the age progressed in the family household, there was no loneliness or the fear of abandonment.  The house used to be flooded with granchildren and other family members who was always ready at their call.  Now, I could visibly see elderly couple staying alone as their children settled abroad in search of better prospects. Recently, at a wedding in Chennai, I noticed that the majority of attendees were elderly people and the younger generations were visibly absent. Most of the elders who attended had a recent trip abroad and was engaged in, who saw what.  I was feeling happy at these dialogues but at the same time could sense some sort of remorse in their voices.

They were a happy family
With children, a couple
Huddling in their small house
In warmth and full of love

As children grew up,
So were their dreams
They dreamt to give them
Whatever they could not achieve

As years passed by
They found the children away
Miles and miles apart
But close to their hearts

Technology made them feel closer
With webcams and chats
But  missed the caress and touch
And little odd things

Still they claim
They have done their best
To find better pastures
For their children

Would love to tell u all
Not to miss a mail
Or a phone now and then
For two souls would be waiting for them.

  8. Very true. Staying abroad I miss my family a lot especially when they need our help most. But in my opinion staying as close as possible to them rather than staying with them might work well. Still am not sure 'coz i stay very far right now..

  23. Very true, I could agree with you more, I feel awful that I am here, when my parents are so lonely there. I call them every single day, but it is not enough for me. Sometimes I feel guilty that I abandoned them...yeah I visit them every year and Dad visits me sometime...but it is not the same...something is yet missing. Loved ur poem.

  36. Very much true. We know this first hand. My MIL passed away recently and when she was alive, she was always yearning to see us inspite of having her other kids near by. When we spoke to her over phone / web the first question she would ask is when we are coming to India. Miss her.:(
